A joint operation between the Internal Security Organization and the Chieftaincy of Military arrested several leaders of the once untouchable Boda Boda 2010- including their Patron Abdul Kitata.
Boda Boda 2010 has described by many as a militia group loyal to the Inspector General of Police, Gen Kale Kayihura.
Kayihura on Wednesday told parliament that the group has greatly helped police to fight crime in Kampala.
Heavily armed Security operatives from the military surrounded the offices of boda boda 2010 in Wakaliga on Saturday before arresting some of the members and whisked away to unknown places.
The security operatives would later recover the items found at the raided offices including pangas, iron bars, motorcycle number places and keys among other items that were later taken by the military as part of their evidence.
“Don’t look at them as Boda Boda riders but they are suspects in a crime CMI is following,” Brig Karemire told the Daily Monitor. Media reports say sources Kitata’s arrest come after two of his 2010 Boda Boda members confessed to CMI that they had participated in the gruesome killing of Case Clinic Accountant, Francis Ekalungar.
Ekalungar was kidnapped on his way to bank Ugx.15m. His body was discovered burnt beyond recognition in Kajjansi along Entebbe Road.
At least seven members of the militia were picked at gunpoint at Bwaise Based TOP Radio. Police, which tried to intervene in the fracas, were reduced to mere spectators as heavily-armed military personnel drove away with the suspects.
Brig Karemire promised to release statement.
When they learnt of the arrests, Hundreds of the militia’s members took to the streets to demonstrate against the arrest.
The group which claims being supportive of President Museveni armed with machetes, has for long terrorized the city leaving a trail of bloodshed and destruction without being held accountable.
October year, Boda Boda 2010 members stopped and beat up pupils of Winter Land Primary School in Kyebando. The Pupils were heading to Nkumba to perform at the police day celebrations – none of Boda Boda 2010 members have been penalized.
While attending the Public Interest Law Clinic (PILAC) at St. Francis Students Centre at Makerere University recently, The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP), Edward Ochom was tasked to explain the circumstances under which, Kitatta works with police to commit crime and always walk scot-free.
Ochom, the head of Directorate of Research, Planning & Development, said he is less qualified to comment on the allegations leveled against Kitatta and Boda Boda 2010
August 10, 2016, Boda Boda 2010 members nearly lynched lawyers at the Makindye Court for lodging a private prosecution against Gen. Kayuhura. They group was deployed at the court by two senior police commanders from Kabalagala and Kibuye.
